THE IDEP COMPUTER CENTER

|
The
Computer Centre is responsible for the computerization of the Institute and management of the
computer stock as well as provision of training for the trainees and staff to ensure maximum and
efficient use of the computer facilities. Computer science occupies a key position in the training
programmes, with trainees spending as much time in the computer room as in the lecture room, processing
documents, searching for data on the Internet and using e-mail. Some trainees who on arrival are not
conversant with computers are, by the end of their studies, able to master the tools and produce
their documents themselves.
The
Institute’s computerization programme comprises:
Development and maintenance of management applications;
Preparation of user guides;
Preparation and verification of financial statements;
Development
and maintenance of Internet access and web page management.
Internet
access is made possible through an existing LAN and WEB connectivity and benefits from resource
sharing through the Institute’s Intranet. The system and subsystems now in place have benefited
from the ongoing support from the United Nations Public Administration and Finance Network (UNPAN)
project which has provided facilities such as Web Servers and the Leased Dedicated telephone lines
for high speed access. Arrangements are now underway to link up to the ECA’s Intranet and to
connect IDEP’s on-line Network to ECA’s Subregional Development Centres (SRDCs).
In this era of Information Society, training in the use of New Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) greatly facilitates the desk research conducted by trainees and also helps the staff in their daily work. It is for this reason that efforts are being made to upgrade the existing computer platforms in order to enhance the full utilization of ICTs by African member states. This way, IDEP trainees will be able to fully participate in the process of developing relevant policies for embracing some emergent development trends such as globalization, electronic government and the new economies. Therefore, the Computer Center also organizes advanced training for the staff and trainees to enable them to make better use of the new technologies in computers and software.
